On 16 August 2026, MRC marks 17 years since our first General Assembly in 2009, following the ratification of the Maldivian Red Crescent Act. That assembly gave the National Society its beginning. Everything since has been built by the people who has been part of it.

A 17 Year Journey Serving Humanity Across the Maldives

17 years represents a generation of service across the Maldives. From the northern atolls to the south, MRC has grown from a newly formed organisation into a trusted humanitarian presence in every community where we work. We have responded to emergencies when communities needed us most, built capacity in first aid and life-saving skills, supported vulnerable populations through health and psychosocial services, and strengthened disaster preparedness across the islands. Our work has expanded to embrace climate action and youth-led initiatives, reflecting how humanitarian need evolves and how MRC evolves with it. Each year has added layers to what we do and where we serve. 17 years is not just a milestone, it is a measure of commitment, capability, and the depth of relationships we have built with communities, volunteers, and partners.

This year's theme celebrates the people who make MRC what it is. It is not a celebration of an institution reaching 17. It is a celebration of the volunteers, members and staff, past and present, in every Unit and every atoll, whose service has carried the National Society this far. Across 17 years they have served in every capacity our mission has asked for, from first aid and emergency response to climate action, healthy ageing, youth development and community service.

MRC17 belongs to every person who has chosen to serve. This year's anniversary is a thank you to the volunteers, members and staff, past and present, across every Unit and every atoll, who continue to serve. As we mark 17 years, we remain committed to serving wherever and whenever humanity calls.
