Our Island Network

From the northernmost atolls to the southern tip of the archipelago, MRC operates through a network of Regional Offices and community-based Units, each one a local presence and one connected to a national movement.

The Maldives is one of the world's most geographically dispersed countries. It requires people on the ground of trained volunteers, members who are embedded in their communities, supported by regional infrastructure, and connected to a national strategy. That is what MRC's island network makes possible.

How the structure works

From Headquarters to island

MRC operates through three layers, each with a distinct role, each dependent on the others. Together, they form the structure that allows MRC to be both nationally coordinated and locally rooted.

National Headquarters

MRC's National Headquarters is based in Hulhumalé, Malé City. The Secretariat led by the Secretary General, manages MRC's national Programmes and services, financial operations, communications, volunteer management systems, and partnerships with government agencies and Movement partners including IFRC and ICRC. The HQ supports all three Regional Offices and provides the strategic and operational backbone of the entire network.

Regional Offices

MRC's three Regional Offices are strategically located in the north, centre, and south of the Maldives. Each regional office coordinates the MRC Units and in its region, supporting their governance, Programmes, and day-to-day operations. The regional office also supports Programmes and Service delivery to island communities within the region.

Island Units

Community-based teams of trained volunteers and members delivering Programmes and services on the islands where people live. MRC's Units are the organization's presence on the ground, the people who know their island, respond when it needs them, and carry MRC's humanitarian work into the heart of every community they serve.

North Regional Office

North Regional Office

The North Regional Office (NRO) is based in Kulhudhuffushi City, the main urban centre of the northern Maldives. It coordinates MRC's humanitarian action across the four northernmost atolls, supporting communities spread across one of the most geographically dispersed parts of the country. The office currently supports two active Units, ensuring that MRC's Programmes and services reach both urban and remote island communities across the region.

It coordinates MRC's humanitarian activities across the central atolls, with a particular focus on the Greater Malé area where MRC operates several of its most visible direct services, including the Patient Transport Service. The CRO works closely with national headquarters and supports the Malé City Unit — the largest and most active Unit in the network.

South Regional Office

The South Regional Office (SRO) is based in Addu City - the southern hub of the country.
