Disaster Risk Reduction & Preparedness
The Maldives is one of the world's most climate-vulnerable countries nearly 200 inhabited islands, each exposed to floods, storm surges, and the compounding effects of a changing climate. MRC's Disaster Risk Reduction Programme works with island communities to understand their risks, strengthen their capacity to respond, and build the local ownership that makes preparedness sustainable long after a project ends. This work is carried out in close partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority and is central to MRC's mandate as auxiliary to public authorities in the humanitarian field.
Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM)
MRC facilitates a community-owned approach to disaster risk management working directly with island communities to identify hazards, assess vulnerabilities, and develop locally driven solutions. CBDRM places communities at the centre of their own preparedness, ensuring that the people who know their island best are the ones leading its readiness.
Formulating Island Disaster Management Plans (IDMPs)
Working alongside community member, local councils and NDMA, MRC supports the development of Island Disaster Management Plans which are practical, island-specific frameworks that set out how a community will prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Plans are developed through inclusive consultation and are designed to be owned, updated, and activated by the community itself.
Specialized Capacity Building Trainings
MRC delivers First Aid and Psychosocial Support trainings at the community level as part of its DRR work, ensuring that islands have trained individuals who can provide immediate care and emotional support when emergencies strike. These trainings strengthen the human capacity that underpins every other element of community preparedness.
Simulation Exercises
MRC facilitates disaster simulation exercises at island, city, and national levels, testing community preparedness, identifying gaps, and building the confidence and coordination of volunteers, community members, and government counterparts. Exercises range from community-level drills to large-scale inter-agency simulations

This work is grounded in MRC's commitment to impartiality and its mandate to serve the most vulnerable.

MRC's Health and Wellbeing Programme takes a holistic, community-centred approach, addressing not only the immediate health needs of vulnerable populations but the broader social, environmental, and behavioral factors that shape wellbeing across the Maldives. In a rapidly changing environment where climate pressures, urbanization, and shifting disease patterns create new and compounding health risks, MRC works to ensure that communities are informed, prepared, and supported to live healthier lives. This work is delivered in close partnership with health authorities and aligned with MRC's Strategic Plan 2019–2030, which recognizes health promotion and resilience as inseparable.

One that is embedded in communities, sustained by young people, and reflected in the way MRC's volunteers engage with the world around them.
