MRC's First Health Camp with Universal Foundation

For many Maldivians living outside Malé, access to specialist healthcare requires a journey to the capital, a barrier that keeps quality medical care out of reach for too many people. In 2016, the MRC partnering with Universal Foundation brought specialist doctors directly to the islands where people live.

MRC's First Health Camp with Universal Foundation

The MRC Health Camp was held across two days each on two islands Gnaviyani Fuvahmulah and Meemu Kolhufushi, both home to active MRC branches. Seven healthcare professionals offered consultations across a wide range of specialisms, including dermatology, cardiology, urology, paediatrics, mental health, ophthalmology, and internal medicine. In total, 479 patients benefitted directly 241 in Fuvahmulah and 238 in Kolhufushi.

Beyond consultations, the camp offered health screening services to check vitals and provided health information throughout both days. A guest speaker from the Cancer Society of Maldives delivered an awareness presentation to parents at GN Atoll School bringing vital information about cancer prevention and early detection to a community where such access is rare. The camp received strong support from the health centres and hospitals on both islands, whose partnership was essential to its success.

MRC volunteers were at the heart of operations coordinating logistics, supporting patients, and ensuring the smooth running of the camp from start to finish.

The Health Camp was made possible through the support of Universal Foundation, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between MRC and Universal Foundation in March 2016. The MOU formalized Universal Foundation's commitment to supporting MRC's health-related activities with the Health Camp as one of the most significant and visible outcomes of that partnership.
