In July 2026, as part of the national response to the ongoing measles outbreak, MRC Male' City Unit supported the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in delivering Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccination sessions across the Greater Malé region. Working alongside Greater Malé Area hospitals, Maldives Airports Company Pvt Ltd (MACL), Maldives Ports and the Malé City Council, MRC contributed to a coordinated effort to protect staff and communities from a disease that can cause severe and life-threatening complications.
Measles is a serious disease that can lead to complications including pneumonia, encephalitis, severe diarrhoea, deafness, and blindness. It can also cause the immune system to forget how to respond to other infections , making vaccination not just a personal safeguard, but a community responsibility. Two doses of the measles vaccine provide strong protection against this entirely preventable disease.MRC encourages everyone to check that their vaccinations and those of their children are up to date. If you have not yet received your MR vaccine, please reach out to your nearest health facility.
MRC's contribution was delivered through its volunteer network, with volunteers supporting registration, administration, and data management throughout the vaccination sessions, ensuring the process ran smoothly and that every person who came forward for vaccination was attended to efficiently. This intervention reflects MRC's longstanding role in supporting public health efforts in the Maldives, mobilising its volunteers to assist national health authorities where they are needed most.
