MRC Publishes Migration and Displacement Needs Assessment Report

The report's findings shed light on the barriers migrants face in accessing basic services, mapped key service providers, and captured the overall needs of the migrant community in the Maldives. It also put forward concrete recommendations for interventions to address urgent and fundamental needs, and proposed measures for creating more inclusive and accessible services — aimed at fostering a more informed and supportive environment for migrants across the country.

To mark the publication, MRC organised a high-level launch event bringing together the Interim UN Resident Coordinator Bradley J. Bussetto, Italian Red Cross Head of Migration Francesca Basile, and high-level representatives and technical staff from government agencies, international organisations, civil society, and partner organisations. A panel discussion centred on the report's findings and the challenges faced by key stakeholders in facilitating access to essential services for migrants — generating important dialogue on the way forward.

Work on the assessment was initiated in late 2022, employing a comprehensive methodology that included individual surveys, desk-based research, and consultative meetings with key stakeholders. Through the mobilization of MRC volunteers, data was collected from migrants across three key regional zones: Kulhudhuffushi City, Greater Malé Area, and Addu City, ensuring a nationally representative picture of migrant needs and experiences across the country. The publication of this report reflects MRC's longstanding and active engagement on migration within the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, and its commitment to upholding the rights, safety, and dignity of migrants in the Maldives.
