With this support, MRC has begun an eight-month project across Gdh. Gadhdhoo, Addu City and Fuvahmulah City to strengthen psychosocial wellbeing, social inclusion and community resilience among older persons, youth and vulnerable groups. Running to February 2027, the project is delivered by MRC's South Regional Office through the Gadhdhoo, Addu and Fuvahmulah Units.
At its heart, the project is about strengthening the wellbeing of communities across the South Region and ensuring no one is left on the margins of community life. By building local capacity for psychosocial support and creating shared spaces for connection, the project aims to bring older persons, youth, and vulnerable groups, including migrant communities into closer contact with one another .Through training, home visits, intergenerational dialogue, and community-led activities, the project works towards a building community resilience across the target communities where mental and social wellbeing are understood, valued, and cared for together.
The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives is a Programme of Global Affairs Canada supporting small-scale, high-impact projects in more than 120 countries. Working through local organisations on the principle that those closest to a challenge are often best placed to respond to it, this year's fund supports projects across Sri Lanka and the Maldives spanning inclusive governance, environment and climate action, peace and security, and economic growth. In the Maldives, it is administered by the High Commission of Canada in Colombo.
