MRC Launches Sri Lanka Relief Fund to Support Communities Affected by Cyclone Ditwah

In response to the severe humanitarian crisis caused by Cyclone Ditwah, MRC has launched the Sri Lanka Relief Fund to deliver critical and timely assistance in support of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS). SLRCS has mobilized its branches and more than 3,500 volunteers to conduct rapid assessments, gather impact data, provide First Aid, and assist affected communities across the hardest-hit districts.

The fund will reinforce these ongoing efforts by enabling the distribution of essential household items—such as drinking water, staple foods, hygiene products, and clothing while also strengthening Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions in severely impacted areas. Additionally, contributions will support the deployment of teams to carry out urgent community needs assessments and enhance search and rescue operations, which remain stretched with over 228 individuals still missing.

These interventions are essential as response operations continue to face significant challenges, including major road closures, inundated routes, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted communication networks. Such conditions have severely restricted humanitarian access and delayed the delivery of vital relief supplies, further heightening the urgency of support.

MRC encourages generous USD contributions to help overcome current limitations in direct fund transfers and to fast-track the first tranche of assistance. To further support this process, MRC will also seek the cooperation of local banks and businesses to facilitate foreign exchange of MVR donations. All funds received under this Emergency Appeal aside from unavoidable bank transfer costs will be entirely remitted to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, ensuring that support reaches the affected communities as swiftly and effectively as possible.
