Ecosystem Restoration
Kulhudhuffushi boasts a wealth of majestic mangroves and water bodies, including notable sites like Mashi Kulhi, Bodavaki Faa, and Maafalu Fengan’du. However, this natural beauty is under threat due to various factors including Anthroprogenic pressure and climate crisis making Kulhudhuffushi one of the most vulnerable islands when it comes to disasters and climate-related challenges.
Over the past five years, Kulhudhuffushi has experienced a series of flooding and swell-surge incidents, often stemming from development practices and the loss of critical coastal and inland vegetation. The island's rapid urbanization, driven by growing housing and infrastructure demands, has contributed significantly to the depletion of vital green spaces.
In response to these environmental challenges, the MRC Kulhudhuffushi City Unit has embarked on a grassroots mission to restore the island's ecosystem. This initiative encompasses the revitalization of coastal vegetation and the preservation of the magnificent mangroves.
Our efforts involve on-going cleanup programs within the mangrove areas and along the coastlines. Moreover, MRC's Kulhudhuffushi City Unit is now in discussion with the Kulhudhuffushi City Council to venture into a memorandum of understanding to establish a dedicated plant nursery. This nursery will prioritize the cultivation of tree species essential for restoring coastal vegetation, mangroves, and fulfilling other green requirements of the island, including planting trees along roads and in public spaces.
