MRC Partners in Launching Hushiyaaru: A Unified National Campaign for a Resilient Maldives

Maldivian Red Crescent is proud to partner alongside the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), UNDP Maldives, and a coalition of partners in the launch of Hushiyaaru — a national initiative to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience across the Maldives.

Hushiyaaru — meaning “Preparedness” — is designed as a unifying platform that brings together government institutions, humanitarian partners, civil society, and local communities under one cohesive framework. The campaign aims to equip individuals and communities with the knowledge, skills, and tools to prepare for and respond to disasters and climate-related risks. At the same time, it aligns risk communication and public awareness to strengthen early action and foster a culture of preparedness across the country.

The campaign represents a longstanding strategic vision shared by NDMA and MRC and key partners, a vision built on years of collaboration and joint action to embed preparedness and resilience at every level of society.  Itis a powerful example of how sustained partnerships can translate into impactful, whole-of-society initiatives that unite institutions, communities, and partners around a common goal: building a disaster-resilient Maldives.

The Hushiyaaru platform was launched during Viluntheri Fest 2025, organized by NDMA and UNDP Maldives alongside  mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), bringing together 20+ partners from government, the private sector, NGOs, and civil society. The event provided a shared space for people of all ages to learn, engage, and contribute to preparedness — and showcased the collective commitment to building a safer, more resilient future for the Maldives.

Building on the legacy of the SPRING Project

The evolution of Hushiyaaru into a national level initative also reflects one of the most significant legacies of the SPRING Project implemented by MRC in partnership with NDMA supported by Asian Disaster Prepardness Center (ADPC), which concluded in 2024.

The strong partnership between NDMA and MRC was central to the success of this early phase, shaping the campaign’s design, delivery, and vision. These efforts provided the basis for Hushiyaaru’s transformation from a project-level initiative into a national platform that now serves as a cornerstone of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate resilience in the Maldives.

As part of the campaign’s natural progression and in recognition of the need for stronger national coordination, the next phase of Hushiyaaru is led by NDMA, the Government of Maldives's lead agency for disaster management. This transition will strengthen institutional alignment and streamlined efforts around disaster risk reduction, preparedness, and climate resilience, while also integrating key elements such as Early Warning for All into the campaign’s scope.
