Maldivian Red Crescent Secretary General Fathimath Himya Concludes Term

Appointed at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Himya led the organization through one of its most challenging chapters, overseeing MRC’s largest-ever emergency operation till date, ensuring vital support reached communities across the country. 

During her tenure, MRC made important progress in advancing its Strategic Plan 2019–2030, expanding programmatic and service provision of MRC and reaffirming its role as a trusted auxiliary to public authorities. During this period, she also provided leadership and guidance to ensure the successful convening of three General Assemblies, supporting MRC’s governance bodies in fulfilling their mandate which included revisions to the Statutes of the organization, which strengthen the foundations for transparency and accountability within the National Society.

Over the past 15 years, Himya has been an integral part of MRC’s journey of growth and transformation, beginning her service in 2010 as a Programme Officer for Health, and steadily advancing through various roles to become Secretary General in 2020. Throughout this journey, she has been part of many of the organization’s defining milestones, from shaping national Programmes and emergency responses to strengthening governance and institutional systems that continue to guide MRC’s work today.

Through her leadership, the organization has built stronger partnerships, empowered its volunteers, members and deepened its connection with communities through the expansion of MRC’s Programmes & Services to reach the most vulnerable while amplifying the organizations presence and voice within the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.

It has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life to lead this National Society in the past 5 years.”
