SPRING Project's Billboard Initiative

SPRING Project's Billboard Initiative

During the months of June and July 2024, the Maldivian Red Crescent in partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), with support from the USAID Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance installed billboard maps across the country, providing vital information on evacuation centers, assembly points, and emergency contact numbers.

The billboard maps, a key component of the Strengthening Preparedness and Resilience through Inclusive Community Governance (SPRING) project, serve as a valuable resource for island communities. The critical information included on the billboard maps was identified through a participatory process during Island Disaster Management Planning (IDMP) Workshops conducted for SPRING's key target islands: Ha. Vashafaru, B. Maalhos, B. Kendhoo, Ga. Dhevvadhoo, HDh. Finey, K. Dhiffushi, and Sh. Komandoo. These workshops involved active participation from local communities, ensuring that the information provided on the billboards was relevant and practical for their specific needs. By strategically placing these billboards in common areas, the SPRING project aims to ensure that residents and visitors have easy access to essential information in case of a disaster.

The initiative is a step towards the project's commitment to mainstreaming disaster risk reduction within island communities. By making crucial information readily available, the SPRING project aims to empower individuals and families to be better prepared for potential emergencies and to respond effectively when they occur.
